“Patriotism is the FIRST refuge of the scoundrel.
There is a very sad tendency for some folks to lightly skim that part of the Bible that says repeatedly to be kind to foreigners. Starting with Matthew, that Jesus guy had some pretty excellent things to say about how people should treat each other with kindness. You would expect people who call themselves Christian to pay some attention.
But the notion that the Hebrew Bible is all hellfire and damnation is easily debunked.
‘Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.’ – Exodus 22:21
‘Do not oppress a foreigner; you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners, because you were foreigners in Egypt.’ Exodus 23:9
‘And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.’ -Deuteronomy 10:19
‘When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt; I am the LORD your God.’ Leviticus, 19:34
It would take a selective reading to harbor some of the beliefs we see expressed … a very toxic sort of Christian … the American Taliban.”

me: If you doubt it, make such a suggestion to one of the ultra right wing Republican Tea Party Christian Fundamentalist conservatives and see how they react. Actions always speak louder than words.
