Obama blew it tonight. Romney was very convincing. For those who haven't been watching the campaign from the beginning Romney must have appeared reasonable, informed, and his ideas worth considering. Tonight was not just a screeching halt to his year long rush to the right, but a complete erasure of his "etch-a-sketch principles." Watch now as he starts "re-drawing" the Romney we saw when he was Governor of Mass. This will win over a lot of the undecided and some of the more conservative Dems and, although the Tea Partiers are undoubtedly not going to be happy, who do they have to turn too?
Obama's performance tonight tells me that his prep team assumed Romney would be selling the same ideas and telling the same lies and being as vague about his plans as his campaign has been up until now. Obama came across as totally caught off guard by Romney's sudden swing away from the Ryan/Tea Party agenda. Knowing Romney's history of taking all sides on all issues they should have anticipated that at this point in the election season he would now be touting positions that would appeal to the middle. He has the nomination. The far right are stuck with him. They will either vote for him or stay home and they hate the idea of Obama being reelected so much he's counting on them holding their nose and voting for him just to be sure that doesn't happen.
